Where Will You Live During Retirement?

You are here: Home / Retirement / Where Will You Live During Retirement?

iStock 840849374For many, retirement represents an opportunity to make a major life change. Perhaps you dream of moving to Florida, or somewhere else with a sunny climate and a lower cost of living. Or, maybe you want to sell your home and travel for a few years. Still others hope to move closer to their children and grandchildren.

On the other hand, plenty of retirees hope to remain at home. According to one poll by the National Council on Aging, 9 out of 10 retirees are planning to stay right where they are! The reasons for this decision are numerous, but include…

  • 85 percent said they like their current homes and don’t want to move
  • 66 percent said they already live near family or friends
  • 50 percent said that moving would be too much of a hassle
  • 30 percent of respondents don’t know where else they would like to live
  • 26 percent said they can’t afford to move anywhere else
  • 23 percent don’t think they can sell their homes, under current market conditions

Some of those reasons sound reassuring. If you live near family and friends, love your home, and you’re happy where you are, then you’re already on track to enjoy a fantastic retirement.

On the other hand, reasons such as lack of funds or unexplored opportunities are less than positive reasons for making a major life decision. Our goal is to help you identify possible avenues to retirement happiness, and to help you craft an income strategy that allows for flexibility.

And, of course, sometimes things just don’t go as planned. An illness or some other emergency could force a move at some point, and we want you to be well prepared for any scenario.

So for these reasons, we urge you to continue meeting with us regularly even after you retire. If you’re happy where you are, we hope you get to stay there for the foreseeable future. At the same time, we can help you create a contingency plan and a bit of extra room in your budget, just in case your plans need to change.
